Rogue Environmental Ed sprouted from a love of outdoor education and the needs of classroom teachers for high quality, flexible environmental education programs in the Rogue Valley.  With a Masters of Environmental Education from SOU and years of teaching science in the classroom, we fulfill a unique role, understanding both the needs of teachers and field-based educators.

After becoming well versed in the many facets of the NGSS, igniting a passion for teaching hands-on, place-based science and years working in a wide range of outdoor education programs our team is thrilled to be getting back to our roots:
sharing the wonder of nature, experience-based learning and making science accessible to all.

Outdoor School Equity Statement

We acknowledge the inequalities to access, relevancy and programming that exist in environmental education and
strive to provide culturally relevant, inclusive science in the field.
We believe there are many ways to be a scientist and that everyone has natural abilities, knowledge and skills that
contribute to our shared understandings.  At Outdoor School we encourage everyone to share their wonder,
their unique selves and gifts because we know that our differences make us stronger.
At Outdoor School we are building a community where everyone belongs.

OUR TEAM

Bethany "Wren" OK-Carr
Program Director

Bethany has always thrived in the outdoors.  Whether it is digging for worms in her garden, being immersed in the mountains on backpacking expeditions or just smelling the scent of fresh rain, she always feels most like herself when connecting to the land we call home.  Bethany's innate curiosity of the world around her led her to become a middle school science teacher and complete a masters degree in Environmental Education.  She is driven to provide students outlets to tap into their skills of science and find joy in learning.  When not working, Bethany can be found planting tomatoes, frolicking in creeks with her daughters or taking a stroll down a windy Oregon beach.

Margaret "Tilth" Rothert
Outdoor School Site Supervisor

Margaret hails from Portland, Oregon where they first fell in love with Outdoor School as a sixth-grader and student leader. Their passion for outdoor education expanded into the realm of urban farming while getting a Biochemistry degree from the University of Oregon. They love exploring, feeling connected to nature, growing food, and teaching others how they can do the same. They have taught in forests, farms, and gardens throughout the Pacific Northwest. When not at Outdoor School, you might find them trying a new recipe, playing Pokemon Go, or packing a backpack for their next traveling adventure.

We hire seasonal instructors!

Why Environmental Education?

Why EE?
Learn More About EE
"Environmental education is a learning process that increases people's knowledge and awareness about their environment and associated challenges, develops the necessary skills and expertise to address the challenges, and fosters attitudes, motivations, and commitments to make informed decisions and take responsible action. (adapted from UNESCO, Tbilisi Declaration, 1978)

Evidence gathered from [a] study of 40 schools indicates that students learn more effectively within an environment-based context than within a traditional educational framework. The observed benefits include:
  • Better performance on standardized measures of academic achievement in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
  • Reduced discipline and classroom management problems.
  • Increased engagement and enthusiasm for learning.
  • Greater pride and ownership in accomplishments."

Next Generation Science Standards
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are multifaceted drawing on the components of Crosscutting Concepts, Disciplinary Core Ideas and Science and Engineering Practices.  All of our curriculum is designed to align with the NGSS and fulfill all three components.
Oregon Environmental Literacy Plan
The Oregon Environmental Literacy Plan (OLEP) was developed after Oregon pass the No Child Left Inside Act of 2009.  The work of Rogue Environmental Ed is to help accomplish the goals of the OELP.  The OELP puts forth a vision in which all Oregon students are:
  • lifelong stewards of their environment and community
  • willing and able to exercise rights and responsibilities of citizenship
  • choose to interact frequently with the outdoors
  • understand multi-faceted relationship to the natural world
  • well-prepared to address the challenges the future holds
